As the holiday season begins, there’s no better time to champion the independent businesses, creators, and entrepreneurs who bring life to our Main Streets. Shopping small is a powerful way to invest in your local economy while discovering one-of-a-kind gifts you won’t find anywhere else.

The Shop Small weekend offers multiple ways to get involved, from exploring your downtown district and supporting local artists to shopping online and showing appreciation for your local Main Street. Here’s how you can make the most of the weekend and celebrate the businesses that keep your community vibrant.

Why Shopping Small Matters

Shopping small strengthens the local economy, preserves character and culture, and fosters community relationships. After a challenging year, many small businesses are counting on strong holiday sales to sustain their work and plan for the future. Let’s come together this weekend to give thanks, shop small, and make an impact.

Plaid Friday

Rather than rushing into the hectic Black Friday crowds, consider opting for Plaid Friday! Head downtown, wear your favorite flannel, and explore independent shops. Plaid Friday shines a spotlight on small businesses that bring personality and community spirit to our neighborhoods. Learn more about Plaid Friday >

Small Business Saturday®

Small Business Saturday® is the biggest small business shopping day of the year! Main Street America has been a proud supporter since the beginning, and we are honored to once-again team up with American Express to help rally communities to support their local businesses through the Neighborhood Champions program. Find a Neighborhood Champions event in your community >

Other ways to get involved:

  • Visit your local brick-and-mortar shops downtown or in commercial districts
  • Encourage friends and family to shop locally
  • Share images of your shopping with the hashtag #ShopSmall to spread the word

Artist Sunday

Artist Sunday is your opportunity to support the creative folks that make your community shine by buying their work, booking a performance, or simply sharing their story. Exploring participating artists is a great way to discover new talent and celebrate the artistry rooted in your own backyard. Find participating artists here >

Cyber Monday

Even if you can’t make it downtown, many small businesses have thriving online presences. On Cyber Monday, make it a point to shop at your favorite local business’ website — or explore curated marketplaces full of unique finds from Main Street stores:

Giving Tuesday

Finish your Shop Small holiday weekend by showing support for your local Main Street organization. Main Streets play a crucial role in supporting entrepreneurs, but many rely on community support. Show your appreciation on Giving Tuesday to help them continue their important work. Find your local Main Street organization >
